Things are looking good as we enter the New Year. I've been able to devote a significant amount of time to studying Fixed Income (despite playing tour guide last week for some beautiful Tennessee gals in Chi-town). Tonight, I finished Reading 52 questions. All the while, I've been able to start using Allen's TestBank. This thing is great and fits into my strategy of reviewing the topics I've already studying. This way it stays fresh. I'm trying to do 6 problems a week on the topics I've already covered, simulating one problem set on the Exam. The other nice feature is a Worldwide Rankings... and yes, yours truly is #1! (I'm not so sure about this... maybe it's to boost my confidence???) Back to the books...

The only thing I wanted for Christmas this year was an understanding of the Quantitative Methods For Valuation Study Session.  Taking breaks from the holiday hoopla, I finishing the end-of-reading practice problems for Reading 11: Correlation and Regression.  While I still don't understand how every statistic is derived, I'm able to do the problems.  I'm definitely better off than when I took Level II a year ago.  Now for PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... that and reading 12... Oh yeah, someone thought about the pain I'll be enduring over the next few months and bought me a French press for the gallons of coffee I'll be guzzling!  Happy Holidays!

US Economy Finally Better?

Dr. Bernanke says economy still looks shaky, and Sarkozy & Merkel just checked their children into the ER.

Will Uncle Sam be allowed to leave the hospital this year?

Congrats to all those who didn't walk out after the first 15 minutes yesterday.  Now for the hard part, waiting for the results!  Good luck!

So, friends, I needed a break from the Quant readings.  I retreated to Fixed Income, a subject that I am familiar with given my current position at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago.  As an investment credit analyst for the Bank, I run loan-level and deal level models in order to determine quarterly Other-than-temporary-impairment on our PLMBS holdings.  When I’m not modeling cash flows, I’m hunting down trustees who don’t calculate trust cashflows correctly.  SIDE RANT: These trustees and servicers are really getting sloppy.  I don’t care how many triggers are blown – You should be able to model these deals more accurately!

I am familiar with the most structures, so I took the opportunity to model some generic structures in Excel while following along in Reading 51 (See screenshot below).  Z-bonds were a little tricky, but I finally got the formulas to work.  That was the fun part.  I still have the end-of-the-reading questions to go through.  After that, I think I will see what the Allen TestBank can throw at me.  I’m not too worried about this section on the CFA Exam.  Let’s hope the next section is the same way!
